Because they dictate the sentence patterns, verbs are the only word or phrase that must be present in a sentence and are perhaps the most important words in any given sentence. As such, it is important to know how to use them, how to create consistent tenses except when tense shifts are necessary, and how to recognize passive versus active verbs.
